Safari Blue

The ultimate Zanzibar day tour — sandbanks, snorkeling & seafood

Tour Overview

Safari Blue is not just a tour — it is a Zanzibar institution. Often described as the single best day trip experience on the entire island, Safari Blue takes you to some of the most spectacularly beautiful marine environments in the Indian Ocean, feeds you a legendary grilled lobster lunch on a deserted sandbank, and returns you to your hotel sunburned, happy, and having lived one of those days you will still be talking about twenty years from now.

Departing from Fumba village on Zanzibar's southwestern coast, you will board a traditional wooden dhow and set sail into the dazzling blue waters of the Menai Bay Conservation Area — the largest marine protected area in Tanzania. The bay is a sanctuary for dolphins, sea turtles, whale sharks, and an extraordinary abundance of marine life protected by both national law and by the vigilance of local fishing communities who have come to understand the long-term value of the ecosystem they steward.

The day includes multiple snorkeling stops at pristine coral gardens, a visit to a mangrove forest by dugout canoe, a BBQ feast on a remote sandbar, swimming in the Blue Lagoon, and the opportunity to try traditional fly fishing and spear fishing with local fishermen. It is the most comprehensive and rewarding marine day tour available in Zanzibar.

Sailing the Menai Bay

The voyage from Fumba harbour into the heart of Menai Bay is itself one of the most beautiful boat journeys imaginable. The water transitions through extraordinary gradations of colour — from the muddy green of the harbour, through jade and emerald, into the most vivid electric blues and turquoises as you pass over the coral reefs.

The traditional dhow creates a perfect platform for the journey — low to the water, quiet, and moving with a gentle rhythm that feels in harmony with the sea rather than in opposition to it. Dolphins frequently ride the bow wave, and flying fish leap ahead of the hull in silver arcs.

Your experienced captain and crew know these waters intimately. They know where the dolphins gather, where the sea turtles rest, where the coral is most spectacular, and — crucially — where the best sandbanks emerge at low tide for the legendary lunch.

Snorkeling the Coral Gardens

Safari Blue includes two or three snorkeling stops at carefully selected sites within the Menai Bay Conservation Area. These sites are chosen for their exceptional coral health, marine biodiversity, and clarity of water.

The coral gardens here are among the most intact in the region, partly because the conservation area status has protected them from the dynamite fishing and anchor damage that has degraded reefs elsewhere. Massive Porites corals the size of cars anchor the reef structure, surrounded by intricate branching Acropora corals, barrel sponges, and waving sea fans.

Marine life is extraordinary. Green sea turtles graze on seagrass beds; schools of yellowfin surgeonfish and Indian Ocean sergeant majors create shimmering silver clouds around coral heads; moray eels peer from crevices; and lionfish hover motionless in the shadows. The sheer abundance of life creates a spectacle that feels almost prehistoric in its richness.

The Legendary Safari Blue Lunch

If Safari Blue is famous for one thing above all others, it is the lunch. As the tide retreats to reveal a broad crescent of white sand emerging from the sea, the crew transforms the sandbar into an outdoor kitchen and dining room, and what follows is one of the finest seafood meals available anywhere in Zanzibar.

The centrepiece is grilled lobster — whole East African lobsters split and grilled over a wood fire until the flesh is perfectly cooked, sweet, and smoky. Alongside come whole grilled red snapper, garlic prawns, calamari, octopus cooked in coconut, and the famous Safari Blue rice — rice cooked with coconut milk, cardamom, and saffron that is absolutely addictive.

Fresh tropical fruits — papaya, pineapple, coconut — and locally brewed ginger juice complete the feast. Everything is caught or sourced that morning, and the quality is exceptional. Many guests rate this as the finest meal of their entire African trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a minimum fitness requirement?
Safari Blue requires moderate fitness — you should be comfortable spending a full day on a boat and in the water. The snorkeling is in open water, though life vests are always provided. Non-swimmers can participate and enjoy most of the day's activities.
Is the lobster included in the tour price?
Yes — the full feast including lobster, fish, prawns, sides, and non-alcoholic drinks is included in the tour price. There are no hidden charges for food or beverages during the tour.
How far is Fumba from the main tourist areas?
Fumba is approximately 30 minutes south of Stone Town by car. We arrange complimentary hotel pickup and drop-off from all major hotel areas including Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Jambiani, and Matemwe.
Can I see dolphins on Safari Blue?
Dolphin sightings are common but not guaranteed on Safari Blue, as the route focuses more on the Conservation Area reefs rather than the dedicated dolphin habitats further north. For the most likely dolphin swimming encounter, we recommend our Mnemba Island tour.

Absolutely incredible experience! Swimming with wild dolphins was a dream come true. Our guide Mohammed was knowledgeable and made sure everyone felt safe. The snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll was the best I've ever done. Worth every penny!

We booked the sunset cruise for our anniversary and it was pure magic. The traditional dhow, the live music, the spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean... My husband and I still talk about it as the best evening of our trip.
