Swim with wild dolphins and explore pristine coral reefs
The Mnemba Island Dolphin & Snorkeling Tour is widely considered one of the best marine experiences in the entire Indian Ocean. Located just 3 kilometres off the northeast coast of Zanzibar, Mnemba Atoll is a protected marine reserve teeming with extraordinary biodiversity and crystal-clear waters with visibility often exceeding 30 metres.
Your day begins early morning as we depart from the east coast of Zanzibar on a traditional wooden boat or fiber glass boat. As we head out to sea, your experienced guide will explain the rich marine ecosystem you are about to enter and brief you on responsible wildlife interaction guidelines. Within 30–60 minutes, you will likely encounter the resident pods of wild spinner dolphins that call these waters home.
After the magical dolphin encounter, we proceed to Mnemba Atoll itself for snorkeling. This is a UNESCO-recognised marine protected area. The pristine coral gardens here shelter over 400 species of tropical fish, sea turtles, eagle rays, octopus, and much more. Whether you are a beginner or experienced snorkeler, the calm, warm waters make this an accessible and unforgettable experience.
A freshly prepared seafood lunch (full day only) is served on a pristine sandbank, where the only sounds are the lapping waves and distant birdsong. After lunch, there is time for swimming, beach relaxation and snorkeling. We leave Mnemba Atoll before we return in the late afternoon, sun-kissed and with hearts full.
Zanzibar is one of the very few places in the world where you can reliably swim alongside wild dolphins in their natural habitat. The waters around Mnemba Island are home to large resident pods of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins and spinner dolphins sometimes numbering over 100 individuals.
Unlike captive dolphin encounters, these are completely wild animals that approach boats and swimmers voluntarily. Our guides follow strict ethical guidelines: we never chase or harass the dolphins. Instead, we position the boat gently and allow guests to enter the water quietly. When conditions are right, dolphins will swim alongside you, sometimes making eye contact. This is an experience that many guests describe as life-changing.
The spinner dolphins are particularly acrobatic, often launching themselves into spectacular twisting jumps. Witnessing this natural behaviour just metres away, in the open ocean, creates memories that last a lifetime. Encounters typically last 20–45 minutes, though they are entirely subject to the dolphins' willingness.
Mnemba Atoll is consistently rated among the top 10 snorkeling and diving destinations in the entire Indian Ocean. The atoll is a roughly circular coral reef system covering several square kilometres, with the tiny private Mnemba Island at its centre.
The reef walls drop dramatically into the deep blue, creating a stunning visual contrast. Coral formations include massive brain corals, delicate staghorn corals, towering pillar corals, and vast meadows of soft coral that sway gently in the current.
Marine life is extraordinarily abundant. Colourful parrotfish, surgeonfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish create a living kaleidoscope of colour. Lucky snorkelers may spot a resting white-tip reef shark, a curious octopus, or a majestic eagle ray soaring past.
All snorkel equipment such as mask, fins, snorkel, and flotation vest is provided and fitted before entering the water. Our trained guides accompany all guests in the water, ensuring both safety and that you don't miss any highlights.
The marine biodiversity at Mnemba Atoll is staggering. Scientists have recorded over 150 species of fish, 50+ species of hard and soft corals, 7 species of sea turtles (though not all are present simultaneously), dolphins, whale sharks (seasonal), humpback whales (June–September), and an extraordinary array of invertebrates.
Bottle nose dolphins are almost guaranteed sightings. Both green turtles and hawksbill turtles nest on the nearby beaches and feed on the reef, however, it is not easy to encounter them. The coral gardens are remarkably approachable and will often allow snorkelers to observe them from close range without being disturbed.
Whale sharks are the gentle giants of the ocean visit Mnemba seasonally almost not available, though not guaranteed, this is one of the best places in East Africa to encounter these magnificent creatures. At up to 12 metres in length, swimming alongside a whale shark is the ocean experience of a lifetime.
