Best Time to Visit Zanzibar: Month-by-Month Guide

January 15, 20267 min readBy Zanzibar Tours Team

Planning a trip to Zanzibar? Our comprehensive month-by-month guide covers weather, ocean conditions, wildlife highlights, and crowd levels so you can choose the perfect time for your visit.

Zanzibar is a year-round destination, but the timing of your visit dramatically affects your experience. From the quality of the snorkeling visibility to your chances of swimming with dolphins, from the price of accommodation to the likelihood of getting rained on during your sunset dhow cruise, when you go matters.

Zanzibar has a tropical climate dominated by two monsoon seasons. Understanding these seasons is the key to planning the perfect visit.

The Two Dry Seasons: When to Go

Zanzibar has two main dry seasons and these are generally the best times to visit.

The Long Dry Season (June to October) is the most popular time to visit Zanzibar. Temperatures are warm but not oppressively hot (24–28°C), humidity is manageable, and rain is rare. Ocean conditions are excellent, with calm seas and water visibility often exceeding 20 metres at top snorkeling sites. This is also the best time to see the dolphins.

The Short Dry Season (December to February) offers some of the finest beach conditions of the year. Temperatures are higher (28–32°C), the sea is calm and crystal clear, and the northeast monsoon brings dry weather. A wide variety of fish species are frequently spotted at Mnemba Atoll during this period.

The Two Wet Seasons: What to Expect

The Long Rains (Masika) fall from mid-March through May. This is Zanzibar's most significant wet season. Rainfall can be heavy and sustained, sea conditions can be rough, and some smaller operators close for maintenance. However, the landscape is lush and green, prices are significantly lower, and those who visit often have beaches almost entirely to themselves.

The Short Rains (Vuli) occur October through November. These are much shorter and less intense than the long rains, typically brief afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. Most tours continue operating normally, and the showers actually provide welcome relief from the heat.

Month-by-Month Guide

January & February: Excellent. Dry, hot, clear seas. Busy but manageable crowds. Best for: sunset cruises, beach lovers, water sports.

March: Transitional. Rains begin mid-month. Early March is still lovely. Best for: budget travellers, solitude seekers.

April & May: Wet season. Heavy rains possible. Dramatically lower prices. Lush landscapes. Best for: budget travel, photography of green scenery.

June & July: Excellent. Dry season begins. Comfortable temperatures. Getting busier. Best for: wildlife, families, first-time visitors.

August & September: Peak season. Best weather, best visibility, busiest crowds, highest prices. Book well in advance. Best for: snorkeling, diving, dolphin encounters.

October & November: Short rains. Brief afternoon showers. Good value. Quieter. Best for: couples, shoulder-season value.

December: Dry, warm, festive atmosphere. Christmas and New Year very busy and expensive. Best for: celebrations, sunset cruises, romance.

Our Recommendation

For the best all-round experience, we recommend June through September or January through February. June and July offer the best balance of weather, wildlife, and crowd levels. August is the absolute peak for ocean conditions but also the most expensive and crowded.

If budget is a consideration, October/November and early December offer excellent conditions at significantly lower prices than peak season.
