Everything you need to know about Tanzania visa requirements for Zanzibar visitors — eVisa application, costs, processing times, and what to do at the border.
Zanzibar is an autonomous region of Tanzania, and visitors require a Tanzanian visa or entry permit to visit. The good news: Tanzania has made the visa process straightforward with the introduction of the eVisa system, and entry is typically quick and hassle-free.
Do I Need a Visa for Zanzibar?
Most international visitors require a visa to enter Tanzania (and therefore Zanzibar). A small number of countries primarily some African nations are exempt. Check the current Tanzania Immigration Department website here for the most up-to-date list of visa-exempt nationalities.
Citizens of East African Community member states (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan) can enter Tanzania visa-free.
Tanzania eVisa: The Easiest Option
The Tanzania eVisa is the recommended option for most visitors. Apply online through the official Tanzania Immigration Department website, upload your documents, and receive your visa by email before travel. Processing typically takes 3–5 business days, though peak season can extend this to 7–10 days.
Cost: A standard tourist eVisa costs $50 USD for most nationalities. The eVisa is valid for a single entry and allows a stay of up to 90 days.
Visa on Arrival
Visa on arrival is available at Zanzibar International Airport and Dar es Salaam Airport for citizens of most countries. Bring two passport-sized photographs, your passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates), and $50 USD in cash (exact change preferred).
Processing is generally quick — 15–30 minutes in most cases. However, during peak arrival periods, queues can be long. The eVisa is strongly recommended to avoid delays.
