White sand, turquoise water, and swaying palms. Zanzibar has some of the world's most stunning beaches, but which beach is right for you? Our guide covers Zanzibar's finest beaches with honest assessments of each area's strengths and weaknesses.

Zanzibar is blessed with extraordinary beaches on virtually every coast, each with its own distinct character, tidal patterns, water conditions, and surrounding community. Choosing the right base makes a significant difference to your experience: here is our honest guide.

Nungwi Beach: Best for Consistently Beautiful Swimming

Nungwi is on the northern tip of Zanzibar and is widely considered the island's best all-round beach. Because it faces north, it is relatively unaffected by the southeast monsoon, meaning the sea is swimmable year-round without significant tidal retreat. The beach is wide, the sand is brilliant white, and there is good infrastructure for food, drinks, and activities.

It is also the most developed tourist area and can feel crowded during peak season. If you want lively beach bars and social atmosphere, Nungwi is ideal. If you prefer seclusion, look further afield.

Kendwa Beach: Best for Sunsets & Parties

Just a short walk from Nungwi, Kendwa has a slightly more laid-back, social atmosphere. The famous Kendwa Rocks Full Moon Party is a Zanzibar institution. The beach is beautiful, the water consistently swimmable, and the sunset views are spectacular. Kendwa beach is ranked among the top beaches in the world for its combination of beauty, accessibility, and social atmosphere.

Paje Beach: Best for Best for Kitesurfing

Paje on the southeast coast is Zanzibar's kitesurfing capital. The consistent trade winds and wide, shallow tidal lagoon create perfect conditions for kitesurfing, and the beach hosts several internationally recognised kite schools. Even non-surfers enjoy the spectacle and the laid-back bohemian atmosphere.

Note that the tidal retreat at Paje is significant at low tide, the sea can be a long walk away, revealing vast sand flats excellent for walking but not swimming.

Matemwe Beach: Best for Seclusion & Snorkeling Access

Matemwe on the northeast coast offers the perfect combination of beautiful beach and proximity to Mnemba Atoll. If snorkeling is your priority, staying in Matemwe means Mnemba is just a short boat ride away. The beach itself is less developed and therefore quieter than Nungwi. Matemwe is ideal for couples and those seeking tranquility.
